This two day workshop will explore the exciting world of miniature and artists' books. Participants will learn basic bookarts techniques while making four miniature books with innovative book structures developed by Peter and Donna Thomas. There will be handouts, with directions for how to make each book structure. These directions are taken from the Thomas's book More Making Books By Hand published by Quarry/Rockport Publishers.
Day 1
A. The Nested Accordion Pop-up Book, a three inch accordion book where one accordion weaves in and out of the other.
B. The Dowel Hinge Spine Accordion Book, or the Woven Spine Book, as we have lately started calling it, is a three inch accordion book where the accordion fold text page weaves through dowels and attaches to the covers of the book to create a piano hinge-like spine.
Day 2
A. The Scrolling Book. In this book the scrolling page takes the place of the text block in a case bound miniature book.
B. The Dowel Spine Portfolio. This project will demonstrate non-adhesive binding techniques while creating a portfolio to hold business card sized ephemera.
Advanced students may have time to put text and imagery in their books. They will want to come prepared with a short 4–10 word quotes and imagery to collage. Pre-cut materials will be provided for all projects, but students may want to bring their own papers to substitute. This will be fun and informative workshop and students will go home with four completed books.
