Sunprint, Blueprint, Cyanotype with Patricia Grass
Sunprint, Blueprint, Cyanotype--whatever you call this photographic process, it’s fun, amazing, addictive. Here in the Northwest the sun can be unpredictable; while we will experiment with whatever sun we have, we will also use an artificial light source to ensure the quality of our prints. Each person will have the chance to make several different prints. Images for the prints can be made from a variety of sources--photographs, drawings, direct drawing on acetate, collage, black paper cut-outs, even actual objects such as leaves, shells, pasta -- whatever! A printing plate is generated and it can be used over and over again. After a day of experimenting each student will do one page of a group book on the theme of, “One Summer Day...” One editioned prints on this theme from each student will be bound together in a concertina structure book--one book for each student. The book will be printed on watercolor paper and covered with fabric we have made using the blueprint method.

Saturday & Sunday, July 12 & 13, 9:30 am - 5:00 pm, Cost: $100 + $50 materials fee. Contact Green Heron Book Arts, The Accidental BookMaker, 1928 21st Avenue, Forest Grove, OR 97116, 503-357-7263, bookkits@aol.com, www.greenheronbookkits.com

Print A Book On The Gocco with Patricia Grass
Yes, it can be done. Our book will be miniature size-- about 2" x 3". We will use the computer to do page layout emphasizing how to organize the pages so that page 2 actually prints on the back of page 1 and how to print two pages on one Gocco screen. We use Ready, Set, Go, a relatively inexpensive page layout program for both the Mac and Windows. We have three Mac’s and one PC for use in the classroom. If you have your own portable computer please bring it. We could just print the book on a computer printer but the silk screen process of the Gocco adds another dimension to the printing. Each person will computer generate a section layout on the computer and print the section on the Gocco. Each section will consist of 8 pages and can include text and image. All the sections will be combined and bound in a miniature book with a sewn on cover. Students will receive more information about the subject of the book before class.

Friday, Saturday, & Sunday, July 18. 19, & 20, 9:30 am - 5:00 pm, Cost: $120 + $40 materials fee. Contact Green Heron Book Arts, The Accidental BookMaker, 1928 21st Avenue, Forest Grove, OR 97116, 503-357-7263, bookkits@aol.com, www.greenheronbookkits.com

Springback Book with Patricia Grass
According to Bookbinding and the Conservation of Books, the spring back is, “A technique invented by John and Joseph Williams, in about 1799. The spring-back consists of a strip of binder's board that, when curved, will fit around the spine. A cloth liner is then glued to the interior of the curve, overlapping the edges by inches on either side. These overlaps are glued to the levers. The purpose of the spring-back is to cause the book to lie flat so as to facilitate its being written in. It acts as a spring, and its pressure on the sides of the book near the spine causes the book to snap open and shut.” There are many precise steps to constructing this book so it is not recommended for the beginner. But with a little book making experience you should be able to do it. We will do suminagashi marbling to make paper for the cover and decorated the text block edges. The spine will be covered with leather.

Saturday & Sunday, July 26 & 27, 9:30 am - 5:00 pm, Cost: $100 + $30 materials fee. Contact Green Heron Book Arts, The Accidental BookMaker, 1928 21st Avenue, Forest Grove, OR 97116, 503-357-7263, bookkits@aol.com, www.greenheronbookkits.com

Full Leather Binding with Gold Foil Tooling with Patricia Grass
This is a traditional hard cover book sewn on tapes, rounded and backed, and covered with leather. The front cover will be tooled using gold and other colored foils and hand tools. The book is about 4" x 5". It is a good introduction to working with leather. We will practice tooling on placards before working on your book. You need not have your own tools as you can use the tools in the studio.

Friday, Saturday, & Sunday, August 1, 2, & 3, 9:30 am - 5:00 pm, Cost: $100 + $40 materials fee. Contact Green Heron Book Arts, The Accidental BookMaker, 1928 21st Avenue, Forest Grove, OR 97116, 503-357-7263, bookkits@aol.com, www.greenheronbookkits.com

Summer Box Bonanza with Patricia Grass
Once again we will be obsessive about making boxes. This summer the emphasis will be on boxes to hold our memories of summer travels. We will make two boxes. One box has a lid that hinges and stands up. It will be made in a size to accommodate 4" x 6" photos and a photo can be featured in the frame on the lid. The second box is called a Journey box (see photo below). It’s very strong and can travel anywhere. It has an upper compartment for a journal and photo storage and a lower drawer for other ephemera collected on the journey.
